Newsflash: Peaceful Protests Close Iolani Palace

If anyone has ever mentioned to you the sovereignty movements that exist in the Hawaiian Islands, take note of the activity that’s happening right now at Iolani Palace on Oahu, the former home of the Hawaiian monarchy’s throne, place of Queen Lili’uokalani’s imprisonment, seat of government, and now a museum. It’s the only royal palace in the United States.

A group called Hawaiian Kingdom Government closed the gates to the grounds and building on Wednesday, in protest of the U.S. government’s actions in overthrowing the monarchy in 1893 and annexing Hawai’i in 1898.

However you feel about sovereignty and the ways in which Hawai’i became a member of the union, there’s a rich history of royalty, commerce, conflict, and culture to be explored here in the south Pacific.
