The B5Media network:

The Origins of LOLspeak

lolcatIf you’re new to the Internet–or not–you’ve probably wondered what’s with the propensity of some folks to post images of cats (aka, LOLcats) or similar animals accompanied by superimposed, slangy, misspelled captions. One of the cornerstone captions of this phenomenon, called LOLspeak, is I Can Has Cheezburger? (or ICHC for short).

ICHC is also a blog, created by Hawaiian blogger Eric Nakagawa (Cheezburger), and his partner, Kari Unebasami (Tofuburger). The blog features LOLcats and other animals, and receives a healthy amount of Web site traffic. Wikipedia notes that ICHC was instrumental in bringing animal based image macros and lolspeak into mainstream usage, which may mean that you can always decide to brush up on your LOLspeak in addition to your Pidgin the next time you visit Hawai’i.
