Hawai’i Delegate at DNC Takes High Road

Hawai’i Delegate at DNC Takes High Road

From the Democratic National Convention in my hometown of Denver, it sounds like the mud is flying, and not just about candidates for president.  According to the Honolulu Advertiser, delegates like to talk some smack about other states, while glorifying their own.
But not Hawai’i deliegate Andy Winer.  He said, “We’re from Hawai’i. We don’t talk stink about other states.”  Add that one to your “I’m rubber, you’re glue” files.

Wearing White After Labor Day in Hawai’i

Wearing White After Labor Day in Hawai’i

Q: Can one wear white after Labor Day in Hawai’i?
The short answer is: Who cares?
While I’m not sure whether or not that’s still a rule that’s even still applicable to today’s wardrobe, the longer answer is: Even if it were a hard-and-fast fashion rule, nobody will care what you’re wearing.  And also: Don’t wear it if you want to bring it home as white and bright as when you brought it.  The red and black sands, as well as the reddish mud and dirt that seems to cover most surfaces on the islands, are bound to stain your nice, bright …read more

Hawaii’s Best Rope Swing

Hawaii’s Best Rope Swing

The path to the falls

If you grew up near water, you might consider the rope swing de rigeur for summertime frolicking and fun.  And rightly so; nothing says “rite of passage” and “finding your inner Tarzan” like a good rope over a cool, natural body of water. (Hope it’s deep, too.)  That’s why if you’re a traveler who’s rope swing literate, you’ll love Kipu Falls on Kaua’i.  If you’re lucky, some locals will be there to give you the best high diving show on the island.  Disappointment alert:  The swing isn’t always there. Authorities periodically cut it down, only to …read more

Umeke Market

Umeke Market

One of the only health food markets that gives Down to Earth a run for its money is the unsuspecting Umeke Market, located across the street from Kahala Mall.  This great little market is full of organic products and healthy lunch items.  Similar to Down to Earth, there is a deli and prepared health food area.  All items are purchased by weight (in ounces).  Also, special bento box lunches are often sold near the front seating area.  Towards the back of the market is a frozen health food section and small produce bin.  There is also a small annex next …read more

Say When

Say When

When is the best time to go to Hawaii?  I’d say right now.
But really, summer is actually a great time to visit, and the crowds are not as big.  You may even find yourself with a little extra time there due to summer break school closures.  This does, of course, leave you with a dilemma if part of your plan is to escape the winter weather during your trip. But Hawaii’s remarkably high hotel occupancies trend downward after the January to March rush, and the weather is basically the same year-round.   And one more advantage Hawai’i has over the Caribbean: …read more

Coffee Shops with Free Wifi

Coffee Shops with Free Wifi

Amazingly enough, it is harder and harder to find a good old fashioned coffee shop with free wifi!  Many of the café chains like Starbucks have teamed up with wireless phone companies to offer daily or monthly internet service plans that cost money!  Below is a short list of some of the nicer, friendlier cafés in Honolulu that offer free wifi.  In most of these cases, “free” means that you should buy something from the café and request the wifi pass code to access the internet on your laptop.

Yogurtland

Yogurtland

Driving on University Ave last month, I noticed a new store that took over what used to be Volcano Joe’s across the street from the University of Hawaii. There were a TON of people too, and it was around 9 p.m. So I decided to investigate.
The concept is quite simple. You choose two different cup sizes (both are decently big), and then you go to one of the MANY yogurt stations (they look like soft serve ice cream stations) and serve yourself whatever combination of flavors you want.  Take advantage of the free sample cups by the register, so you …read more

Whole Foods Goes Hawaiian

Whole Foods Goes Hawaiian

Whole Foods Market’s first store in Hawai’i is scheduled to open at 7 a.m. on Sept. 10 at Kahala Mall, the company announced today. At 28,000 feet, The Kahala store will be the third biggest Whole Foods; it’s the first of four stores Whole Foods plans to open in Hawai’i.My personal reaction is mixed. As someone who’s been looking for some variety in food shopping experiences, the Market makes a welcome addition, but then again, I have been known to avoid Whole Foods, calling it “Whole Paycheck” among my friends and family.
Stay tuned for more from this interesting development.
