What to Read When You Have Lots and Lots of Time

Wallace’s magnum opus is over a thousand pages long, but is some of the best literature has to offer.  It has nothing to do with Hawai’i really, but if you happen to find yourself at the library, or on the beach for, oh, say twenty years, Infinite Jest is a long-lasting tome that will …read more

Opihi: Them’s Good Eatin’

Opihi: Them’s Good Eatin’

‘Opihi, also known as limpets, are little mollusks and a Hawaiian lu’au delicacy that are exceptionally good if you”re into shellfish. However, the little shelled critters have been overharvested over the years, and so not only are the pickings slim, but government is considering bans on selling and picking ‘opihi.  This means that some restaurants and lu’aus are importing limpets from as far as Ireland.
If you are able to get your hands on enough ‘opihi to make a nice dish, try this excellent BBQ ‘opihi recipe from Bobby Flay.  Just remember, whatever you do, don’t eat ‘opihi in front of …read more

Winds Change on Big Island

Winds Change on Big Island

This just in, from Vog Watch ‘08:  the Kiluea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has been emitting more than twice the sulphur gasses it traditionally has.  Up until now, winds have swept those vog-causing gasses to  the north, toward Kona and beyond.  Authorities say today, however, that the winds are shifting to a more southwesterly Kona direction, thus affecting Hilo, South Kohala, Puna, and other communities northeast of the volcano summit.

Mayoral Elections Yield Poor Voter Turnout

Let’s hope that the poor voter turnout that prevented Mayor Mufi Hannemann from locking up his re-election in the primary doesn’t carry over into the presidential elections in November.Hannemann’s missed opportunity means that City Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi now finds herself with the unique opportunity to turn public unease about mass transit to her advantage in the November runoff.  Whatever your politics are, it’s always important to vote.  If you’re a resident who is not registered to vote, find out how to get that way today.
