Wherever You Go, There You Are, Even in Paradise

Here’s one from the Hawaii celebrities file:

Wayne Dyer, who’s been called “the father of motivation,”  is a longtime Maui resident with a loyal following that finds him walking the beaches and touting the medicinal virtues of Bikram’s yoga.  One of my favorite parts of his “Inspiration” talk broadcast on PBS is his explanation of what it’s like to live in Hawai’i.

“I live on Maui,” he says, “and people often want to know what it’s like to live in Hawai’i.” The rest of the story goes like this: He asks the person what it’s like to live where she lives.  People will answer with something like, “We love it,” or, “We hate our neighbors,” or “It’s OK.”

“That’s probably what you’ll find on Maui, too then,” he says.

The moral of Dyer’s story, I think, is that geography can only change so much of one’s experience, and that the more a person changes inside, the more things change outside.  Whether you believe him or not, what do you think your life would look like if you lived in Hawai’i?
