Honolulu’s Best Museums

Despite its unique cultural aura, Honolulu has just a handful of museums — most of which feature a blend of Asian and pan-Pacific artwork.  A rainy day can be the perfect time to catch up on your artistic side in paradise.  Here are your best options:

Contemporary Museum of Art
Located in a garden setting in Makiki Heights, the Contemporary Museum is the only one in the islands that is devoted exclusively to modern art.  There’s a great little café situated amidst postmodern statues, and there’s plenty more to admire for at least a few hours.

Honolulu Academy of Arts
Hawaii’s premier fine arts museum has a permanent collection of over 50,000 works with an emphasis on Asian art.  The museum is situated around several serene courtyards worthy of resting your feet or gathering artful inspiration.  It also hosts traveling art exhibits from around the world.  Its Doris Duke Theater features several interesting independent and foreign films all year.  There’s also a great café that serves up some of the best lunches in town.

The Movie Museum
An homage to the classic flicks of Hollywood, the Movie Museum in Kaimuki is a great find for film lovers.  Here, cinema lovers can recline comfortably on recliners to watch a variety of great films or borrow one of a collection of 3,000 videotapes.  The museum was opened in 1989 by movie buff Rick Kraemer and has since been a staple for families and moviegoers.
