Taking Advantage of Limited Performances
Because of its remoteness and high cost of living, Hawaii rarely hosts top-rated performance acts, but when they come through, it is to everyone’s benefit to take advantage of them!
I recently attended a Cirque du Soleil touring show called "Saltimbanco" and was blown away by the acrobatic talent that we islanders so rarely get a chance to see. There was a cool concert at the Kaneohe Marine Base this summer that featured the music of "Everclear" and "Live." "The Lion King" musical also came through last fall and was the perfect evening entertainment for families.
Currently, the Bodies Exhibition is showing at Ala Moana through November. Aside from this and the last few performances of"Saltimbanco," there is little to be offered in terms of visiting entertainment.
The problem with Honolulu as a whole is that there are very few venues that can house big performers. The Blaisdell Center and the Aloha Stadium are pretty much all we have to count on for sports and theater productions. The Pipeline Café down the street off of Ward Avenue is great for music concerts. We also have occasional performances at the Waikiki Shell, next to the Honolulu Zoo.
To take advantage of the occasional big-time performances and events in Honolulu, be sure to check out the Honolulu Weekly or Midweek newspapers that come out every Wednesday. The TGIF guide inside the Friday installment of the Honolulu Advertiser can also be a good resource.
